Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time. The Google cameras have made it to Peru to register 91 of the country’s heritage sites – including Macchu Picchu, the Sacred City of Caral and the Citadel of Chan Chan. Thanks to them, before long it will be possible to virtually walk around these incredible heritage sites from the comfort of your own sofa.
The Google Street View Project is a feature of Google Maps and Google Earth that enables users to view and navigate through 360 degree horizontal and 290 degree vertical panoramic street level images of selected cities and their surrounding metropolitan areas around the world.
For millions of people who’ll never have the opportunity to visit Macchu Picchu itself, I suppose this is the next best thing – but let’s be honest, it will never be anywhere near as exhilarating as the real thing. There’s nothing quite like dangling your feet over the edge of oblivion with an Inca Kola in your hand!
